EGX 2017: Glyndwr start-ups set to change the gaming world… one pixel at a time.

Video games produced by students from three companies set up at Wrexham Glyndŵr University are set to exhibit alongside the latest releases from PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch at EGX 2017; the biggest video games event of its kind in the UK.

Gearing up

All three start-up have taken advantage of the Enterprise Lounge; an affordable work space offering added support from the Zone Enterprise Hub, Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s dedicated enterprise service. This way, every occupant of the Enterprise Lounge can access expert business advice, one-to-one mentoring, and access to workshops and training in all areas of business development.

Quest accepted!

As well as exhibiting, Ethereal Games, Round Square Studios and Static Shell Studios will pitch for a grant of £25,000 from the UK Games Fund at the NEC, Birmingham, as part of the Tranzfuser programme; a talent development programme funded by UK government which provides business start-up support.

Rich Hebblewhite, programme leader for the University’s Computer Game Development degree, said: “One of our most important goals at WGU is supporting and growing the local and regional games industry, and being part of Tranzfuser as a regional development hub has helped us to grow into that role in a bigger way.”

He added: “We will be supporting our teams as they pitch for substantial investment that will see them embark on their careers as games developers, and more importantly, business owners.”

Gamers unite

Visitors to EGX 2017 get to trial the latest games before their release dates, from Far Cry 5 to the latest FIFA offering. Exclusive gaming merchandise will be available, and there will be a careers fair which offers the latest advice on securing a career in the industry.
